Some trending paths to quality assurance in teacher education: A discourse for teachers in Nigeria

Abstract

Teachers have crucial roles to play in achieving educational goals and purposes and, since “no education system can rise above the quality of its teachers”, sound education has to be given to the teachers while in training because the standard of teachers affects the performance of the pupils. However, beyond the education acquired during training, teachers must develop themselves constantly to meet up with best global practices because education is dynamic. That is why this study is bringing to the fore, the trending path to quality assurance in teacher education across nations as a discourse for teachers in Nigeria. This paper, therefore, focuses on teacher’s personal development in lubricating their talents through; on-the-job education, training, and retraining, use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), mentoring, participating in school decision-making, partnership, and teamwork, induction programme for new teachers, Professional Learning Board (PLB), student evaluation of teachers, among others, as some of the trending path. The paper noted, however, that teachers may not be able to do all these alone without the support of the government at various levels. It is, therefore, recommended that as a matter of urgency, the government should have a template for the continuous professional education of teachers and make it part of the promotion criteria to enforce compliance.
